Punta Cana like a local: Where to stay, what to do, and how to experience the island without stress

Table of Contents

Planning a trip to Punta Cana is exciting... and a little overwhelming. There are so many beaches, hotels, excursions, and neighborhoods that it's easy to wonder: Where should I stay? What is really worth doing? Am I choosing the right area?

After more than ten years of welcoming travelers every day—families, couples, groups of friends, newlyweds, people visiting the island for the first time—I can tell you something with complete sincerity:

Punta Cana is not a destination to “see.” It's a destination to experience.

That's why this guide isn't going to tell you “the usual.” It's what I usually recommend when a client writes to me asking: Where should I stay? What should I do? Which area is best for me?

Join me on this journey, and I'll tell you everything as if you were sitting next to me on the way to the hotel, with that mixture of excitement and nerves that everyone feels the first time. And if it's not your first time, you know what I mean.

I can tell you clearly and honestly that we should start by choosing where to stay, as it's not just a simple “I like this hotel.” I'm telling you that this can determine what kind of days you'll have on your vacation in the Dominican Republic.

Where to stay in Punta Cana (depending on what you're really looking for)

Choosing where to stay is more important than it seems. Each area has a distinct personality, and your experience will vary greatly depending on where you sleep.

Bávaro is for those who want to have everything close by.

Bávaro is like that reliable friend: it never lets you down. If someone arrives in Punta Cana for the first time (as may be your case) and doesn't know where to start, I would usually say: “Stay in Bávaro and don't complicate things.”

Why? Because it's the most complete area:

  • calm and beautiful beaches

  • hotels for all budgets

  • restaurants and bars nearby

  • accessible shopping centers

  • water activities without having to go far

Bávaro is perfect because it offers comfort, atmosphere, a good beach, and if you want to explore other areas later, Bávaro is right in the middle of everything.

From Bávaro, you can get to nearby excursions or beaches very quickly. But maybe you're thinking of something less resort-like.

El Cortecito for those who want something more local and less resort-like

If you are someone who prefers to walk through streets bustling with local life, try authentic food, and not feel cooped up in a resort, then this is the area for you.

El Cortecito has:

  • small hotels with more personal service

  • more flexible prices

  • local restaurants (the real ones) like La Yola Restaurant. Believe me when I tell you how important it is not to miss out on this amazing experience of visiting the restaurant.

  • beautiful beaches with a more relaxed atmosphere

  • easy access to water activities

Here, I always see travelers who want a more natural and less “all-inclusive” experience. And you can tell because their vibe is different, more human.

Have you heard the phrase, “A relaxed trip to Punta Cana starts with the first mojito”? Speaking of which, there are areas created precisely for that...

Cap Cana for those seeking luxury, privacy, and pristine beaches

Cap Cana is something else entirely. When I recommend this area, it's usually because the person wants an elegant, peaceful trip where they can enjoy a good cocktail without crowds.

In Cap Cana, you'll find:

  • Five-star hotels

  • Marinas, private clubs, and golf courses

  • Top-notch spas

  • Quiet, clean beaches

  • Scape Park and the famous Blue Hole

The truth is that everything is very well maintained, very safe, and very exclusive. If your idea of a vacation is “to relax without worrying about anything,” Cap Cana is the perfect fit.

But if what you're looking for is total privacy, let me tell you a true story...

Uvero Alto: to unwind, sleep well, and get away from the noise

Uvero Alto has a special charm. It is more remote, wilder, wider... and its waves will remind you of that. A few months ago, Leslie and her partner from San Jose, California, wrote to me with a very common question:

"We want peace and quiet, but we don't want to be too far from everything.

Is Uvero Alto a good place to start?"

I told them what I always say: Uvero Alto is not for those who want to walk to shops or bars. It's for those looking for wide beaches, quiet hotels, and real privacy.

Perfect for:

  • couples

  • honeymooners

  • travelers who want peace and quiet

  • those who love walking along long beaches without crowds

The resorts here are very good, and many have adults-only areas. It's the kind of place where you really feel like you're far away from the world. And here comes another important part.

How to get around Punta Cana without wasting time or losing your patience

Something I always explain to new travelers is that Punta Cana is not a city where you can walk everywhere. Distances are deceiving, and public transportation is not designed for tourists.

You have several options, but not all of them are convenient:

  • Renting a car: total freedom, but more stressful than you might expect if you don't know the area.

  • Public transportation: cheap but unpredictable. I don't recommend it for excursions with a schedule.

  • Relying on the resort: practical, but very limiting.

After working in tourism for so many years, I know that the best option for most travelers is a private transfer because it is safe, punctual, and drops you off exactly where you need to be, without having to improvise under the sun, which is not comfortable at all.

I've seen many couples waste hours waiting for taxis, or families walking under the sun without knowing that their hotel was in an area with nothing around it. That's why, whoever you are, my recommendation is usually the same: a private transfer saves you arguments, detours, variable prices, and unnecessary stress.

And last but not least, the area where you stay also defines what you're going to eat.

What to eat in Punta Cana (depending on where you are)

I firmly believe that one of the best ways to get to know the island is to sit down and eat like a Dominican would.

That's why I'm giving you some recommendations that I always give:

  • Mangú con los tres golpes (salami, cheese, and fried egg): a typical, energy-packed breakfast.

  • La Bandera (rice, beans, and meat): a classic home-cooked meal.

  • Sancocho: thick, delicious, and perfect after a day at the beach.

  • Fresh fried fish: simple, crispy, and full of Caribbean flavor.

In Cap Cana, the offerings change: more gourmet restaurants, fish of the day, carefully prepared international dishes. In Uvero Alto, due to the more isolated nature of the area, everything revolves around the hotel... but with good quality and variety.

And once you're eating well, the most fun part begins...

What to do in Punta Cana (depending on the type of traveler you are)

Everything is connected: your location determines your food, your food determines your energy, and your energy determines what you want to do.

For example:

  • If you are in Cap Cana, you are minutes away from Hoyo Azul, Scape Park, and some of the most natural excursions.

  • If you stay in Bavaro, you have easy access to catamarans, snorkeling, and water activities such as the Dolphin Tour.

  • From Uvero Alto, many prefer to go for more peaceful experiences: walks like the one at Montaña Redonda, long walks on the beach, spa sessions, or visiting Playa Macao for surfers.

Each offers a different version of the Dominican Republic, and that's the beauty of it: Punta Cana is not just one thing. And after seeing thousands of travelers go through the same thing, there's one piece of advice I always repeat.

Before closing... a personal tip

After so many years, I have noticed something that happens constantly: the best trips are not the most expensive or the most planned... they are the ones you take at a leisurely pace.

 Take your time.

Walk along the beach early in the morning.

Talk to the locals (I'm sure they'll treat you well).

Try new things.

Punta Cana is a beautiful destination, but above all, it's a destination that's easy to enjoy if you relax a little.
